Abingdon Pottery
Abingdon pottery as artware produced for only 17 years by 1934 to 1950. Ceramic Art was developed by the Abingdon Sanitary Manufacturing Company, Produced Abingdon, Illinois, as a way to supplement the backward production of the main line of products - sanitary fittings - during the Great Depression.
The artware no longer produced, though production was ramped up again for plumbing fixtures in the period after World War II housing boom. At that time, the company, renamed in 1945 to Abingdon Potteries, Inc. and still in the city of Abingdon is located in rural Illinois, was the Briggs Manufacturing 1951 sold.
The original company goes to 1908. With the rise of indoor plumbing, Abingdon pioneered some of the first self-colored lighting and ventilation of toilets in the 1920s. The company was led for most of President Raymond E. Bidwell. The Chicago World's Fair Abingdon selected devices only for its sites in 1933.
It was during this period that the company decided to explore the development and manufacture of ceramic art. Designer Frances Moody, Leslie Moody engineer and designer Eric Herslet be credited for making this new product a success.
Another company, President, John M. Lewis, decided that the products should only be an appeal based on their appearance and functionality does not issue - on the basis of the reputation or the reputation of any designer. He also made sure that the production of a particular design has been limited in number, they have a collector's value later. A surprisingly large number of Abingdon Pottery Designs are original, and not direct copies of others.

The same durability as for their sanitary ceramics became known, was present in the art of ceramics company. Georgia clay, feldspar, and South Dakota, Illinois, silica, were glazed with almost 200 varieties and colors. Particularly valuable were the colorful pieces and those who started the hand painting presented (in the 1940s).
